Happy Easter! The Importance of Almonds in Biblical Times

Posted

This Sunday is Easter, a time to get together with family and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ as told in the Bible. It is also the time of rebirth and new beginnings that we often times associate with the changing of winter into spring.Indeed, right now we can see new life being breathed into the landscape around us by observing the plants and animals we see every day.Beautiful flowers are blooming, and the bees are hard at work pollinating those flowers.

As we mentioned in an earlier post, now is the time when almond trees are blooming in California, where the majority of the world’s almonds are grown and harvested. The beautiful white flowers of the almond trees will soon be pollinated by those busy bees, and over the course of the summer those blooms will become delicious almonds, the same almonds that will eventually be used to make NaturAlmond almond butter.

Almonds have been enjoyed by humans and animals for thousands of years.Did you know that almonds are one of two types of nuts mentioned in the Bible? That’s right; almonds have been around since the days written about in the book of Genesis, and were one of the foods eaten by such biblical figures as Jacob.

Almonds are mentioned in The Book of Genesis, paragraph 43, verse 11:

And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds.

In this story, Jacob and his sons desire to return to Egypt from the land of Canaan.Unfortunately, the country is in the middle of a terrible famine.Jacob and his sons bring some grain with them, but this food supply is quickly exhausted. At this point, they know they must go to the governor of Egypt to obtain some food for their band.Knowing they should not approach such a powerful man without a gift, Jacob commands his sons to gather up the best fruits in the land, including almonds, which were plentiful in Canaan and were considered the best in the world.Such a gift would have made quite an impression on anyone at the time, even someone as important as a governor.

Back then, almonds were considered some of “the best fruits in the land,” and today they still are.Just thought we would share a little bit of history surrounding almonds as we kick off the Holy Week!
